April Fool’s day is always a good laugh, and I like to make sure I get at least a few japes done. This train of thought led me to creating my own line of My Little Pony figures and putting them up on Equestria Daily along with a fake press release - [link]
The thing with April Fools is that people are expecting to be tricked. To me, the worst jokes are things which are simply untrue. The best ones meanwhile are ones that either trick someone and when the trick is revealed they realise how hilarious it is, or that are obviously untrue but at the same time so awesome you want them to be real. I Was aiming for the latter with this ridiculous selection, though from the Equestria Daily comments, it seemed some people took a few minutes to twig that all was not right!
Lots of these images are quite small - I really struggled to find good high quality shots of ponies, so resorted to using small but good quality official shots for the most part. As an advantage it helped cover up some of the blemishes.
Be sure to read the press release too, it has a lot of bizarre things in it! [link]
Yellowstar - Yellowstar is of course, 's character who has a bit of an internet following, and also featured in my story The Star In Yellow ( [link] ). I really like how she came out actually, though the cutie mark is a bit light I think. I thought it was important to mix in some 'could be real toys' figures.
Newsprint - This was a bit devilishly hard! This is the OC pony of the guy who runs Equestria Daily, Sethisto. Obviously I couldn't call him Sethisto, so went for a vague Hasbro-sounding name. This was probably one of the trickiest to do, and also the one which looked most photoshopped, mainly because there is only one male pony figure (Shining Armour) and he hasn't been released yet so good photos are few and far between. It is also astonishingly difficult to make white (Shining Armour is mostly white) into a different colour. The toy also had a crown and a big piece of chest armour which I had to photoshop out.
King Zebra - Based on the character from the infamous 'German' pony comics, King Zebra comes complete with a hat (Bravestarr's hat actually) with a plastic feather, boa, and pimp cane. I did my best to make the boa look plastic, but that and the hat still has a bit too much photoshoppy sheen. The band that holds the cane onto his leg is my own creation! As the Zecora toy is glow in the dark, I decided King Zebra should be pure white to differentiate him.
Jungle Attack Fluttershy - This is the one which started it all, and the one that looks best! Fluttershy has some nifty camouflage paint all over her which was done with a few simple hue shifts, and also has an array of deadly weapons! These are Dinorider weapons with special hoof-clips attached.
Power Armour Twilight Sparkle - I was so nearly there with this one, but forgot a few shadows on the armour! All the armour is Dino Rider armour, apart from the helmet which was from an actual Twilight Sparkle toy, though it was photoshopped on from a different picture (I needed her in this exact position for the rest of the armour to line up).
Mini Moon - Or, rather, the infamous fan character Nyx given a Hasbro-friendly copyrightable name. I'm pleased how she turned out, though she does look a bit fuzzy (enough that some people thought it was supposed to be a plush). It's very hard to make something look solid black in photoshop - Mini Moon is actually a Sweetie Belle which I got as white as I could and then colour-inverted with an aim to making her black but with enough texture to look three dimensional. Her wings are photoshopped in from Scootaloo.
Pipsqueak - This is Sethisto's fault. He asked for a Little Pip, and I spent ages photoshopping the little male foal which is in the background of the show before realising that he probably meant Little Pip from Fallout: Equestria. Uh, SURPRISE! Pip is an Apple Bloom toy with some simple hue blotches. Because there is no male foal buck, I carefully photoshopped a modified mouth from Shining Armour onto his face. No-one noticed, they were all too busy laughing at his hair. Well that's what it looks like in the picture chaps!
As always, all comments welcome. The important thing is though that we all had fun!
